Kieran's research investigates the variation in understory vegetation between different aged urban forests within Hamilton City and forests outside the city. Environmental data such as temperature, relative humidity, soil moisture and light penetration is being explored to assess differences between locations. Urban forests generally have reduced understory diversity and in order to improve such diversity. He is conducting planting trials with three understory species, Hedycarya arborea, Coprosma arborea and Melicytus micranthus. The results will determine their potential to become a significant component in Hamilton City forests.
