Thesis topic: Temporal and spatial variations of cyanobacteria in Karori Reservoir, Wellington
Matt's research involved sampling phytoplankton and other relevant parameters within Karori Reservoir, Wellington. Phytoplankton samples were quantified by both real-time PCR and conventional taxonomic means, and sorted and analyzed with the other data sampled. The data wasl then incorporated with information (e.g. meteorology, bathymetry, inflows and outflows) from other sources into the coupled numerical models DYRESM-CAEDYM and ELCOM-CAEDYM, in an effort to predict phytoplankton dynamics within the reservoir. The effects of Perch removal to initiate a trophic cascade, in an effort to decrease phytoplankton biomass within the reservoir was investigated.
