Associate Professor Brendan Hicks

Leader of the Invasive Fish Group
Brendan has research interests in the biology of freshwater fish biology generally, and specifically in the use of stable isotopes to elucidate aquatic food webs, migrational history of fish through otolith microchemistry, and genomic techniques. Examples of publications on these topics include the influence of land use on fish distribution and diet, marine-derived nutrient inputs by coho salmon to coastal Alaskan environments, and the influence of forestry on fish. Brendan is Deputy Director of the Waikato Stable Isotope Unit, a successful mass spectrometry suite that provides analyses of stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen to a wide variety of commercial and research clients. Brendan is the Chairperson of the Department of Biological Sciences, and acts as Expert Commissioner or the Auckland Regional Council for major consents involving fresh water.
